Durban's coast faces east over the warm Indian Ocean, so a sea-view room is also a sunrise room, and it pays off most in winter. From June to August the air is dry and clear, days reach the mid-20s, and the sea stays around 20°C thanks to the Agulhas Current. Winter is also when the sardine run reaches this coast, usually around June or July, drawing dolphins, gannets and sharks close inshore. A traveller's takeI would book the Beverly Hills for a sea view without surprises, since every room faces the water, and the Oyster Box if the lighthouse view and the spa justify it. On the Golden Mile I would choose Belaire Suites, but only on a high floor, because Snell Parade is loud below. I would not book a Ridge or business-district hotel for its view unless the room category says ocean view in so many words: a standard room up there can face inland. And I would always choose a room on the eastern side, for the sunrise over the Indian Ocean.
