Location matters more than the kitchen. On Umhlanga Ridge, near the Gateway mall, a studio such as The Millenial, unit 404, scores 9.1 from only 13 reviews, but the beach is about two kilometres away, so you will drive to swim. Unit 95 at the Oceanic block in North Beach puts you on the Golden Mile side, with the city promenade on your doorstep. Savannah Park Luxury Apartments holds 8.2 from more than 1,500 reviews; I could not confirm its exact position from official sources, so I would look at the map closely before choosing it for a beach stay.
The sea sets the rhythm of a self-catering week. The Indian Ocean off Durban stays around 20°C even in August, and the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board protects the main bathing beaches with nets and drumlines that are lifted after storms, when those beaches close. Winter, June to August, is dry and mild, with days in the mid-20s, but late June and July are South African school holidays, when the Lagoon Drive complexes fill with domestic families. I would book May or September for a quieter week, with a still-warm sea and space at the pool.
A traveller's takeFor a week with children I would rent a two-bedroom apartment at the Pearls of Umhlanga, for the kitchen, the children's pool and the seven-minute walk to the main beach, and I would ask for the exact unit's floor and view before booking. For three or four nights as a couple I would rather take a kitchenette suite at Belaire Suites on Snell Parade, with hotel service and the Golden Mile outside. I would not choose a Ridge studio for a beach holiday, however good its reviews: two kilometres uphill means a car for every swim.
