Our take

At 9 Main Street, Plett Quarter puts you at the top of the town's main street, with Central Beach, the cafés and the galleries on foot, and its rooftop pool and bar look over the whole bay. The 54 rooms are not equal: 13 Luxury Sea Facing Suites have a private balcony and full or partial ocean views, 22 Luxury Suites look over the town, and 19 compact Economy rooms face the inner atrium. I would book a sea-facing suite or nothing, because several guests have ended up on a lower floor with little view. Parking is secure but charged.

  • Book one of the 13 Luxury Sea Facing Suites if the view is the reason you chose Plettenberg Bay: they are the only rooms with a private balcony facing the ocean.
  • Go up to the rooftop pool and bar at the end of the day: from there you see the whole bay, and between June and November you may spot southern right whales offshore.
  • Drive the 8 km south to CapeNature's Robberg Nature Reserve early, and carry water: there is none on the trail, and the full loop via the Point takes four hours or more.
  • Walk down Main Street to Central Beach rather than taking the car; the hotel's parking is secure but charged, and the beach is within walking distance.

Why we love it

  • Rooftop swimming pool with sun terrace
  • Family rooms with sea or city views
  • Diverse dining options on-site
  • Convenient location near the airport
Why guests love it

I would put a family in one of the Luxury Suites, around 38 square metres with a lounge area, which is what the hotel itself recommends for children; the Economy rooms, around 17 square metres and facing the atrium, are sized for a couple. The rooftop pool is the part children will remember, and Central Beach is a walk down Main Street, so you can leave the car parked for most of the stay. Sanctuary, the street-facing restaurant, serves through the day, which helps with irregular meal times. The weak point is that some rooms sit on a lower floor with little light or view, so ask for the floor when you book. Rated 8.6 from 1,193 reviews.
