Stays in Plettenberg Bay

Plettenberg Bay, Plett to South Africans, is the Garden Route town built around a wide bay, about 30 km east of Knysna and outside any malaria zone. For a first stay I would sleep in town, on the slope above Central Beach: Plett Quarter, at 9 Main Street, has a rooftop pool over the bay and puts the beach, cafés and galleries on foot. If you want forest and silence instead, Tsala Treetop Lodge and Hunter's Country House stand side by side off the N2, about 10 km out, and you will drive to the beach. Robberg Nature Reserve, run by CapeNature 8 km south of town, is the walk not to miss: the Witsand circuit passes above a seal colony, and the Nelson Bay Cave centre explains the Stone Age finds on the peninsula. Southern right whales are in the bay from June to November, humpbacks arrive in November and stay to about early January, and Bryde's whales and dolphins are seen all year. The trap is December and January, when the town is full of South African holidaymakers and every bed is booked months ahead.

Updated October 16, 2026

Where to stay in Plettenberg Bay depends on one choice: the town above Central Beach, where you walk to the sand, the restaurants and Main Street, or the forest off the N2, about 10 km out, where Tsala Treetop Lodge and Hunter's Country House sit side by side and you drive everywhere. Plett is on the Garden Route in the Western Cape, about 30 km east of Knysna, outside any malaria zone. Its two big reasons to come are on the water: CapeNature's Robberg Nature Reserve, 8 km south of town, with a seal colony and three circuits from 2.1 to 9.2 km, and the whales, with southern rights in the bay from June to November and humpbacks arriving after them.

Tsala Treetop Lodge

Luxury treetop suites with private infinity pools and forest views

Why guests love it

This lodge is built around couples, and its raised walkways, private plunge-style pools and quiet atmosphere are better suited to adults than to small children. Families with older teenagers who want a special treat may enjoy a villa, with more space and the same forest views. For families with younger children, the beaches, wildlife sanctuaries and kayaking around Plettenberg Bay are easier to enjoy from a larger resort or self-catering house closer to town.

Hunter's Country House

Elegant suites with private pools and a spa in the Garden Route

Why guests love it

Hunter's Country House is a five-star property on the Garden Route, 10 km from Plettenberg Bay, rated 9.5. It offers elegant thatched-roof suites and non-thatched rooms, with some suites that have private terraces with pools and gardens. Free WiFi, a spa and a pool are on site, and an outdoor boma with a fireplace gives evenings a relaxed shape. I would recommend it for a quiet, refined retreat rather than a beach-front base.

The Plettenberg Hotel

A Thesen-family mansion on the headland above Lookout Beach

Why guests love it

The Plettenberg is a small hotel first, and families get the most from it by taking one of its two self-contained houses: the two-bedroom Beach House or the three-bedroom Lookout Villa, each with a private pool and deck that give children room a hotel corridor cannot. In the main building, rooms have air-conditioning and under-floor heating, and most open onto a balcony or patio facing the bay. The Sand Restaurant leans towards seafood and local produce, which suits adults more than fussy eaters. The water here is the Indian Ocean, milder than the Atlantic side of the Cape, and Lookout Beach is a short walk from the hotel. I would bring children old enough to enjoy a beach day and a whale-spotting session rather than toddlers who need a kids' club. Our data shows a 9.4 score from 676 reviews, a solid sample for a property this size.

Sky Villa Boutique Hotel8.7Boutique

Sky Villa Boutique Hotel

Panoramic views, plunge pool, and stylish rooms in Plettenberg Bay

Why guests love it

Sky Villa leans towards couples, with a small plunge pool, a cocktail-focused Sky Bar and a calm, adult atmosphere. Families with older children who enjoy views and quiet evenings can still have a good stay, especially in spring and autumn when Plett is calmer. For younger children, the beaches at Central and Lookout and the wildlife sanctuaries in The Crags are a short drive away, but a resort with more space and a larger pool may suit better.

Plett Quarter Hotel - Lion Roars Hotels & Lodges

A rooftop pool over the bay at the top of Main Street

Why guests love it

I would put a family in one of the Luxury Suites, around 38 square metres with a lounge area, which is what the hotel itself recommends for children; the Economy rooms, around 17 square metres and facing the atrium, are sized for a couple. The rooftop pool is the part children will remember, and Central Beach is a walk down Main Street, so you can leave the car parked for most of the stay. Sanctuary, the street-facing restaurant, serves through the day, which helps with irregular meal times. The weak point is that some rooms sit on a lower floor with little light or view, so ask for the floor when you book. Rated 8.6 from 1,193 reviews.

What to expect

  • Central Beach and Main Street on foot from the hotels in town
  • Robberg Nature Reserve, 8 km south, with a seal colony and three circuits
  • Southern right whales in the bay from June to November
  • Forest lodges off the N2, about 10 km from town
  • Outside any malaria zone, about 30 km east of Knysna

Local tips

  • Start Robberg early and pick the circuit to your legs: the Gap is 2.1 km and about 30 minutes, Witsand 5.5 km and two hours, and the Point 9.2 km and four hours, not suitable for young children.
  • Carry water on Robberg: there is none along the trail, and the rocky sections are exposed to wind and sun.
  • Take the Witsand circuit if you want the seals: it passes above the resident colony, and it crosses the Witsand dune on the way.
  • Come between June and November for southern right whales in the bay; the humpbacks arrive in November with their calves and stay until about early January.
  • Stay near Main Street if you want to walk to Central Beach and dinner; the forest lodges off the N2 mean driving for every meal outside the lodge.
  • Stop at the Nelson Bay Cave interpretive centre on Robberg to understand the Stone Age remains found in the peninsula's caves.
