Our take
I would pick The Midlands Hotel as a plain, practical base in Pietermaritzburg rather than a destination. Rooms with garden views, free WiFi and air-conditioning cover the essentials, the year-round outdoor pool is a clear plus, and the patio, picnic area and outdoor fireplace make evenings outside easy. An on-site restaurant and free private parking add convenience. A 7.6 rating from 215 reviews suggests a decent but unremarkable stay.
- Take advantage of the outdoor pool, it's open all year for a refreshing swim.
- Explore the nearby Queen Elizabeth Park Nature Reserve for a dose of nature, it's only 4.4 km away.
- Consider renting a car to easily visit attractions like Howick Falls, located 14 km from the hotel.
