Ballito's stretch of the Dolphin Coast carries no malaria risk and no reserve fence to work around, so Fairways Hotel settles into golf and beach territory instead, some 47km up the coast from Durban and about 20km from King Shaka International Airport. The recently refurbished hotel runs its own solar panels and borehole water, so outages elsewhere barely register here. Days start with breakfast on the patio and can close with dinner in the formal dining room, or a slower stretch by the garden swimming pool. Salt Rock, close by, keeps its beaches behind shark nets and lifeguards and adds a large tidal pool for calmer swims, while golfers cross over to Zimbali or Umhlali. Couples travelling for a honeymoon and families with children share the same grounds without friction, and on-site parking covers both.
