The unit I could verify is a refurbished one-bedroom with a king bed, a small kitchen and a shower room, facing the Mosterdshoek mountains. It lies in the Breedekloof, roughly 15 km south of Wolseley, about 110 km from the V&A Waterfront and 3 km from Bosjes on the R43. Summers here are warm and dry, the rains come from May to late August, and the grape harvest runs from late February into April. Our take
De Hoop Farm has been worked by the same family for five generations, and the cottage puts you inside that farm rather than next to it: vines and fruit orchards begin at the patio. I would book it for two or three quiet nights in the Breede River valley, cooking my own dinners and driving to Bosjes or the Breedekloof cellars by day. It is built for two, with one king bed, so families need another address. It also demands a car: there is no restaurant, shop or village within walking distance, and Wolseley is the nearest town. The 9.8 score is outstanding, but 19 reviews is a small base.
- If you searched for whales and coastal fynbos, you want the De Hoop Nature Reserve on the Overberg coast, around three hours away; this farm is in the Breede River valley north of Worcester.
- Do your shopping before you arrive: the cottage is self-catering and the nearest shops are in Wolseley and Worcester.
- Bosjes, 3 km away on the R43, serves lunch only at Bosjes Kombuis, daily from 11:30 to 16:00, while its Spens does breakfast from Wednesday to Sunday; the farm closes to day visitors on some wedding dates, such as 7 November and 5 December 2026.
- Come between late February and April to watch the harvest in the vineyards around you, and skip May to August if you want dry days for walking and riding: that is the rainy season.
- Bring a mountain bike: riding routes run through the surrounding valley, and the farm sits among them.

Why guests love itI would not pick De Hoop as a family base. The cottage I could verify sleeps two in a single king bed, with a small kitchen and one shower room, so there is no room to add children. Its strengths suit a couple or a solo traveller: a working farm of vineyards and fruit orchards, five generations of the same family, a patio facing the Mosterdshoek mountains and free parking at the door. Families do better 3 km away at Bosjes, which has rooms in its restored Cape Dutch homestead and children's playgrounds in the gardens next to its restaurant. If farm life is the point and you only need one or two nights with one older child, ask the owners whether another unit on the farm takes more people before you book.
