Stays in Vereeniging

Vereeniging is an industrial and historic town on the Vaal River in southern Gauteng, about 60 km south of Johannesburg. Its riverside resorts and lodges are popular weekend escapes for boating, fishing and quiet river views.

Updated October 9, 2026

Vereeniging lies on the north bank of the Vaal River in southern Gauteng, roughly an hour's drive south of Johannesburg and O.R. Tambo International Airport along the R59, and it sits outside South Africa's malaria zones. The town grew around coal and steel, and it gave its name to the 1902 Treaty of Vereeniging that ended the Anglo-Boer War, a story told at the local museum. Today most visitors come for the river: resorts and lodges line the Vaal between Vereeniging and Vanderbijlpark, with lawns running down to the water, jetties for boats and space for families on weekends. The Vaal Dam lies a short drive upstream for sailing and fishing, and riverside stays here offer a calm alternative to Johannesburg hotels.

  • Drive the R59 outside rush hour to keep the trip from Johannesburg near one hour.
  • Bring insect repellent for evenings on the riverbank in summer.
  • Combine a river stay with a day at the Vaal Dam for sailing or fishing.
  • Use a car here, as resorts are spread along the river and public transport is limited.
