The Capital Menlyn Maine
Apartments with kitchens in Pretoria's walkable Menlyn Maine precinct
About this stay
The Capital Menlyn Maine mixes hotel rooms with one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments and two penthouses, which makes it one of the few places in Pretoria where a family can spread out and cook. It stands in Menlyn Maine, the mixed-use precinct marketed as South Africa's first green city, where buildings were designed to Green Building Council ratings and the streets are laid out for walking. Woolworths, Pick n Pay and Checkers are all inside the precinct, and the Time Square casino and arena, Central Square and Menlyn Park are close by. The Union Buildings are 10 to 15 minutes by car, OR Tambo International about 45 to 50 minutes depending on traffic. The hotel has an outdoor pool, a gym, the KOI restaurant and free secure parking.
- Hotel rooms plus one- to three-bedroom apartments
- Three supermarkets inside the Menlyn Maine precinct
- Outdoor pool and on-site gym
- Free secure parking

Our take
The Capital Menlyn Maine earns its place by its apartments: real kitchens in one-, two- and three-bedroom units, in a precinct with three supermarkets and pavements you can actually walk on, which is rare in Pretoria. I would book it for a family stopover before or after a safari, a long business stay, or a concert at Time Square's arena. I would not book it as a resort: there is no golf on site despite what some listings suggest, the pool is a city-hotel pool, and the area is about shopping, offices and the casino rather than leafy calm.
- Ask about 16th by KOI, the breakfast room on the 16th floor of the Trilogy building across the road: seating is limited, so it is worth requesting early.
- Stock the apartment kitchen at the Woolworths, Pick n Pay or Checkers inside the precinct rather than driving to Menlyn Park.
- Allow 45 to 50 minutes to OR Tambo International and more at rush hour, when the N1 and the R21 slow down.
- On concert nights at Time Square's arena, the precinct fills up: walk over rather than queue for the car parks.
Why we love it
- Apartments with kitchens up to three bedrooms
- A walkable precinct, rare in Pretoria
- Time Square and Menlyn Park close by
- Breakfast with a view at 16th by KOI
Why guests love itThe apartments are what make this a good family base: up to three bedrooms with a kitchen, so children keep their own routine, and free secure parking for the hire car. Pretoria is outside the malaria zone, and the city's own sights, the Union Buildings, the National Zoological Gardens and the Voortrekker Monument, are 10 to 20 minutes away by car. Within the precinct, BOUNCE trampoline park and the Barnyard Theatre fill a rainy afternoon. The limits are clear: this is a commercial district with a casino next door, the pool is modest, and there is nothing resembling a beach or bush setting. With 8.8 from more than 1,250 reviews, guests rate it well for space and convenience.
