About this stay

Pezula Nature Retreat sits on Lagoon View Drive in Sparrebosch, on the Eastern Head of Knysna, inside the gated Pezula Private Estate that runs from the lagoon side down to Noetzie Beach and its historic castle houses. Guests reach that beach by the estate's free shuttle. The suites have fireplaces, and some come with a wood-fired hot tub or views over the lagoon, the ocean or the fairways; two-bedroom family suites exist for larger groups. The Pezula championship course, an 18-hole, par-72 layout by David Dale and Ronald Fream that opened in 2000, runs along the clifftops high above the Indian Ocean. The spa adds a heated indoor pool, a sauna, a steam room and a gym.

Our take

Pezula is the hotel to book on the Garden Route if you want the cliffs rather than the town: it sits on Knysna's Eastern Head, inside a private estate whose golf course runs along the clifftops and whose beach, Noetzie, is reached by shuttle. I would choose it for a honeymoon or a golf stop between Cape Town and Plettenberg Bay. I would not choose it for evenings in Knysna on foot: the waterfront and Thesen Island are a drive away down the hill, and the estate is quiet by design.

  • Ask for a suite with a wood-fired hot tub for the morning: the retreat offers to have it lit and ready before sunrise.
  • Take the estate shuttle to Noetzie Beach rather than driving: it is a private stretch of sand below the estate, lined with historic castle houses.
  • Golfers should check the dates of the Pezula Golf Classics, held twice a year in April and September, and either enter or plan their rounds around them.
  • Book well ahead for late June and July: the Knysna Oyster Festival and the Knysna Forest Marathon fill the whole town.

Why we love it

  • The clifftop Pezula course above the Indian Ocean
  • Noetzie Beach and its castles by shuttle
  • Wood-fired hot tubs ready before sunrise
  • Two-bedroom family suites
Why guests love it

The two-bedroom family suites make Pezula workable for families, and the estate gives children space: a private beach at Noetzie reached by shuttle, walking trails and an indoor heated pool for the cool Garden Route winters. The Garden Route is outside the malaria zone, so the stay fits easily at the end of a road trip from Cape Town. The limits are practical. The golf course and the spa are the heart of the place, which suits couples better than teenagers looking for something to do, and Knysna's waterfront activities need a car. With a rating of 9.1 from more than 1,100 reviews, guests clearly rate the setting.
