Spa Hotels in Cape Town, from Gardens to Constantia
For a spa hotel in Cape Town, the strongest spas sit in two areas: Gardens, below Table Mountain, where the Mount Nelson's Librisa Spa has eight treatment rooms, and the leafy Southern Suburbs, where the Vineyard Hotel in Newlands and The Cellars-Hohenort in Constantia pair a spa with large gardens. That suits couples and anyone planning a rest day between wine estates and the Atlantic coast. Our 25 Cape Town spa and wellness hotels average 9.2 out of 10 across 17,848 reviews, and 22 of them score 9.0 or more. The catch is that many are small guest houses where wellness means a pool, a Jacuzzi or a sauna, not a treatment floor.
Cape Town wraps around Table Mountain: Victorian streets in Gardens and Tamboerskloof, apartment blocks along the Sea Point promenade, oak-lined Newlands and the wine farms of Constantia. Wind and weather change by the hour, and each side of the mountain gets them differently.
Which Cape Town hotel spa deserves the trip
Cape Town makes a better case for a spa than most beach cities. The Atlantic off Clifton and Camps Bay stays cold even in summer, the south-easter can blow for days, and the Table Mountain cableway closes in strong wind. Winter is the rainy season. A hotel with a heated pool, a sauna or a steam room is the plan B that saves those days.
The Mount Nelson has the most complete hotel spa on this page. Librisa Spa occupies a row of restored Victorian houses in the hotel's nine acres of gardens on Orange Street, with eight treatment rooms, two of them for couples, a steam bath and a Finnish sauna. There are two heated pools, one of them reserved for older guests. The hotel scores 9.7 out of 10 from 183 reviews. I would book it when the spa and the gardens are the point of the trip and you still want to walk into the city centre.
For a spa retreat in the Southern Suburbs, the Vineyard Hotel in Newlands is my first choice, ahead of Constantia. It runs a full-service spa open daily, and it is one of only two hotels in our Cape Town selection with an indoor pool as well as an outdoor one, which matters on a wet winter afternoon. It scores 9.3 from 1,335 reviews, the deepest record of the spa-focused hotels here. Newlands puts you near Kirstenbosch and the Constantia wine route, but you will need a car or a ride for the Atlantic beaches.
The Cellars-Hohenort in Constantia is the quietest of the three big spa hotels. Its wellness spa has a steam room and dedicated massage, facial, manicure and pedicure rooms, and the grounds hold two swimming pools with mountain and garden views. It scores 9.3 from 848 reviews. I would choose it over the Vineyard for a slower stay built around long lunches on the Constantia estates, and over the Mount Nelson if you do not need to be in town at all. It is the furthest of the three from the Waterfront and the Atlantic beaches.
Smaller hotels offer wellness on a different scale. Cloud 9 in Tamboerskloof has a spa with a sauna and three treatment rooms, within walking distance of Kloof Street and Long Street, and scores 9.1 from 923 reviews. Dorp Hotel has a sauna and fitness centre and scores 9.6 from 610 reviews. Derwent House, near Kloof Street, has a pool and an outdoor Jacuzzi, and Botany House is an adults-only retreat with a heated pool. On the Atlantic side, Ellerman House in Bantry Bay and The Cole by Broken Bath Beach in Sea Point list spa facilities with sea views.
A traveller's takeIf the spa is the reason for the trip, I would book the Mount Nelson and spend the windy afternoons between Librisa Spa and the heated pools. For a Southern Suburbs stay, I would pick the Vineyard Hotel in winter for its indoor pool, and The Cellars-Hohenort in summer for the Constantia estates. I would not choose a Sea Point or Camps Bay hotel for its spa alone: you go there for the promenade and the sunsets, and the sea will be too cold for most to swim long. For a small, quiet base with a sauna, Cloud 9 is my pick.

A 7.8 rating from 2,764 reviews is good. I would recommend it for practical city stays with a view, especially for drivers.
Local tips
- Book Librisa Spa at the Mount Nelson when you book the room: it has eight treatment rooms, and only two of them are set up for couples.
- Keep a spa slot free on the days the south-easter blows hardest: the Table Mountain cableway closes in strong wind, and the hotel spa is the obvious replacement plan.
- In winter, from about May to August, choose a hotel with an indoor pool: in our Cape Town selection only the Vineyard Hotel and one Taj suite listing have one.
- For a sauna rather than a full spa, Cloud 9 in Tamboerskloof and Dorp Hotel both list a sauna, and Cloud 9 adds three treatment rooms.
- Staying in Newlands or Constantia puts Kirstenbosch and the Constantia wine farms close by, but plan a car or a ride for Camps Bay and the Waterfront.
- Do not book an Atlantic Seaboard hotel expecting warm sea swims after a treatment: the water at Clifton and Camps Bay stays cold even in summer.
