Our take
Treyntjes Rivier is three cottages on a farm off the R320, each with its own hot tub, and that hot tub is what guests keep mentioning. I would book cottage 2 or 3 for a couple who wants Hermanus in whale season without sleeping in town, with a fireplace for the cold Overberg nights. I would book cottage 1 for a family of four who want to cook and braai. I would not book it if you want to walk to restaurants: everything, from Caledon to the Hermanus cliff path, is a drive away.
- Plan your arrival before 19:00: check-in closes then, and the drive from Cape Town International is about 108 km.
- Come between winter and spring for the southern right whales at Hermanus, 25 km away, and keep the cottage fireplace for the evenings.
- Use the R320 towards Hermanus to stop at the wine farms of the Hemel-en-Aarde valley, and leave the driving to someone who is not tasting.
- Shop in Caledon or Hermanus before arriving: there is no restaurant on the farm, every cottage has a full kitchen, and cottage 1 has an outdoor braai area.
